Summary of the Poem A Poison Tree

In A Poison Tree, William Blake explains how anger works differently when expressed and when hidden. The poet says that when he was angry with a friend, he openly shared his feelings and the anger came to an end. But when he was angry with an enemy, he did not express it, and instead, the anger grew stronger inside him. He secretly nourished this anger with fears, tears, false smiles, and cunning tricks until it grew like a tree bearing a bright, poisonous fruit. His enemy saw the apple, desired it, and entered the poet’s garden at night to take it. By morning, the enemy was found lying dead beneath the tree. Through this story, Blake teaches that anger, if expressed honestly, can be resolved, but if suppressed and fed with deceit, it becomes dangerous and destructive.
